The Navy has deployed gift history in Cathedral City, California for over thirty years. The city became a popular military installation in the 1930s, when the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department moved from Santa Clara to Cathedral City as part of the Defense buildup during World War II. The USS Constitution (BB-48) was commissioned in 1944 and served as an Naval Research Laboratory ship until 1946. She was then used by the United States Coast Guard as a training vessel from 1948 to 1951. In 1955 she was leased to the Navy and became flagship of Destroyer Squadron 10 (DesRon 10). Her last deployment with DesRon 10 was in 1959 when she returned home after spending six months at sea on deployments to Korea and Vietnam. In 1973, CVN 78 became homeported at Naval Station Lemoore, California while Naval Supply Depot Oakland filled her originally designed purpose of supplying ammunition and other essential supplies for ships stationed along America’s West Coast. This service ended on 25 September 1981 when CVN 78 decommissioned after serving 41 years of continuous operation at Lemoore. On 3 October 1984, CVN 83 replaced CVN 78 at Lemoore and served as America’s first Nimitz class carrier afloat since World War II. She remained active through most of her career before being decommissioned on 14 December 1991 after 42 years of service. Today, only one artifact from her long naval Deployment History remains – the “Allison Class Ferret Boat Museum” which is located adjacent to Carr Harbor Marina in Cathedral City CA

Cook decided to create a USS Constitution replica ship using blueprints he had been provided by the United States Naval Institute (USNI). The replica was built over two months and took several thousand hours to complete. This unique gift will not only make friends and family members happy but it will also help them understand what service men and women do every day in order to support our country.

The Cathedral City area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 1800s. The first mission in the area was founded by Father José de Jesús María on the site of what is now Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1828. After years of missionary work, the mission was abandoned in 1848 and never reopened. The first post office in Cathedral City opened in 1850. In 1874, a new church was built on Second Street between Spring and Alameda Streets and named Our Lady of Angels. The congregation grew quickly, and soon there were four churches within town limits- two from scratch, one from a gift from an individual donor, and one that had been started by a group of men from nearby Fresno who had come to hear about Catholicism coming to California. By 1899, there were twelve churches with 1,600 members spread throughout town. In 1907, Samuel Morse donated land for a college which would be called Sierra Nevada College (now UC Berkeley). Morse died before it could be completed; however his wife threw her support behind the project and helped fundraise for over $100 million dollars which would eventually help build the college campus across University Avenue from downtown Cathedral City. In 1913–14 under then-Mayor James Jurek's leadership plans were made to bring industry into town through what is now Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Cherry Street just east of Market Street In 1951 when California became an independent country all but two townships (Alameda County) became part of Riverside County including Cathedral City
