The city was founded by an group of Mormon settlers in 1847, and became a center of religious activity for Mormons and other converts after they were permitted to establish a permanent foothold in California. Churches and other religious organizations flourished in Cathedral City during the late 19th century, as various denominations convened there to spread their beliefs. In 1912, the Mormon leader Brigham Young designated Cathedral City as the capital of what would eventually become Deseret Utah. By 1970, however, cathedral city had shrunk significantly due to high levels of development throughout Central Valley. Today, few people live within its boundaries; instead, it is home to a small number of businesses and commercial areas that support local government services. The history of Cathedral City began with an agricultural community that grew up around the nearby Rancho San Bernardino Adobe on land that has since been annexed by the city. The Adobe was erected by Spanish settlers in 1799-1800 as part of rancho de Los Nietos grant from Governor Manuel Nieto de Santa Anna. It was later acquired by Captain José Arguelles y Villalobos during Mexican rule over Californias (1821-1846). The settlement at Rancho San Bernardino grew slowly until 1849 when Major James Wickersham established his cattle station here after traveling through central California on his way to find new grazing land for his herd. Wickersham named his station "New Jerusalem" after Jerusalem in Israel which he had seen while campaigning for Mexican independence from Spain. The first building erected at Rancho San Bernardino was a adobe house built by Arguelles y Villalobos named Casa Blanca (White House).
