C Cathedral City, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 43,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Cathedral City was made by Mormon missionaries in 1851. The city was founded on May 15, 1882 by James Mather and others as a result of the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad's main line between Palm Springs and San Francisco. By 1902 it had grown to include the towns of Mentone and Rialto and had become one of Southern California's most rapidly growing cities. In 1929, Cathedral City became an incorporated town with its own government when it became a part of Riverside County following passage of legislation legalizing annexations within Riverside County by other municipalities. The following year saw another rapid growth as the city annexed two adjacent communities: Northridge and Jurupa Valley. In 1945, after World War II ended with Japan's surrender, housing shortages prompted the city to approve plans for a shopping mall that would be built on undeveloped land east of downtown (the current site of Pomona). The project was completed in 1949 but failed to bring much economic development to Cathedral City; instead it attracted mainly tourists who spent their weekends at nearby beaches or visited Anaheim or Fullerton for recreation purposes. The Cathedral City community of over 100,000 people was founded in 1885 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first church was a small log structure on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1912, the first stone building was erected on what is now Orange Avenue, and in 1923, the present-day cathedral was dedicated. The congregation has grown to include more than 1,500 members andrews catholic school located within walking distance of downtown Cathedral City. Downtown Cathedral City is home to a variety of businesses and services including two hospitals - Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Valleyview Regional Medical Center - as well as churches (St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of Loreto Parish), bars/restaurants (Pizza Hut, Red Lobster), shops (Marshall’s Hardware store & JCPenney), public library (the Cathedral Public Library), as well as a number of parks including Oak Park Cemetery and Golden Gate Park. The history of Cathedral City goes back to 1885 when local Methodists organized a group to build a new church on land that had been donated by John Sutter. The original temple was designed by architects George Humphrey Marshall and Julius Rosenwald with Gothic Revival elements inspired by Rome's cathedrals. The cornerstone for the current cathedral was laid on July 5th, 1912 under guidance from then-President Woodrow Wilson who called it "a monument which will stand long in memory." A $5 million bond issue in 1923 funded construction of the present day cathedral which features an externally cruciform design with slender spires at each end indicative of its Japanese origins. Downtown Cathedral City also features murals created by noted California artists named Adolph Weinreb & Edward Hopper among others.
The first people to live in what is now Cathedral City were the Tongva People. The Tongva People occupied the area between Mission and San Francisco Bay for more than three hundred years. They built their first permanent settlement in 1826, and by 1850 they had a population of over two thousand. In 1851, the California Gold Rush began, and soon Cathedral City was filled with prospectors and miners. By 1863, there were more than one thousand people living in the city. The city grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s, thanks to its role as a transportation hub for miners and prospectors travelling up and down the Pacific Coast. During World War II, Cathedral City became a main military base for California's Army Air Forces. Many of California's most famous buildings were built here: including Alcatraz Island, Fort Point at Monterey Bay, and NAS Hawthorne Heights. After the war ended, Cathedral City experienced a period of rapid growth that continued until the early 1960s. During this time, many new developments were erected in downtown Central Valley Park—including shopping malls and office complexes—and central business districts began to emerge throughout Northern California. Today, Cathedral City is an vibrant community with a rich history that continues to grow today. It has become home to many businesses and organizations such as churches (including Catholic) as well as art galleries and cultural institutions that offer programming unique to cathedral city residents alone or within commuting distance from other areas of Northern California."
