The United States Army has a long and storied history in Cerritos, California. The first U.S. military presence in the area was small, consisting of a detachment of soldiers from Fort Tejon in 1849. The arrival of Americans did not mean the end of conflict between Mexican forces and Californians; skirmishes continued until 1853 when Mexico ceded California to the United States. It wasn't until 1861 that American troops were permanently stationed in Cerritos after the outbreak of the American Civil War. In 1865, General John Custer's cavalry unit clashed with Mexican forces near Cerritos while on their way to battle at Palo Alto Hill. This event is generally considered to be one of America's bloodiest battles and led to increased U.S.-Mexican tensions which would continue through the remainder of the war. Despite these hostilities, American soldiers maintained an important role in cerritos during much of this time period; they erected both military posts and developed various agricultural initiatives such as irrigation systems and crop rotation programs. In 1918, following World War I, Congress passed laws authorizing theArmy to establish bases within California for purposes such as training new recruits and supplying materiel for operations in Europe and Asia (this also gave rise to present-day Naval Base Corona). It wasn't until 1942 that Ulysses S Grant's Headquarters & Service Department relocated from Chicago Heights, Illinois to San Diego; this marked America's first permanent overseas headquarters location for its armed forces outside North America proper (the Commanding General’s Headquarters remained headquartered at Fort Meade on Maryland Avenue throughout World War II). In 1945, during World War II efforts were made by then-Governor George Norris to increase troop strength levels along with plans for Camp Pendleton - then known as Marine Corps Air Station Miramar - which would become homeport for Navy aviation units during peacetime periods; however these plans never came into fruition due primarily to budgetary restraints within wartime Contraption Halliburton Corporation (known today as ChevronTexaco) who owned control over naval base lands adjacent thereto at that time... Despite these challenges (and others), by 1945 it appeared that post-World War II manpower needs had been met without difficulty by local citizens who voluntarily contributed their services through various means including: private donations/donations from individuals or businesses who could no longer afford government rates or enlistment bonuses necessary for army service...
