Cerritos is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 15,826 at the 2010 census. Cerritos is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and on the border of Kern County. It lies within the Greater Los Angeles Area. The name Cerritos comes from Spanish words "cerro" meaning hill and "tierra" meaning land or country. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cerritos were missionaries in 1795-96 who named it after Mission Santa Anita de la Sierra because they were victorious there against an Indian force two years earlier. A post office called Cerritos was established in 1847. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. As far back as 1824, Mexican citizens had been living in what is now Cerritos and its adjacent rural areas since before Rancho Alta Robles became part of Mexico's southernmost province, Baja California Sur on October 20th that year by treaty between Mexico and American General Antonio López de Santa Anna During this time period there were three types of ranching activity: small holdings by men who did not own any property outside their own household; larger grants from Mexican government officials to individual ranchers with some families occupying more than one hundred acres (40 hectares); and nationalidad rancheros which consisted primarily of cattle grazing lands granted by Mexican President Manuel Micheltorena to Ute Indians who paid taxes on these animals
