The station functioned as a dumping ground for used clothes and other items left by people living on the Peninsula. In 1938, the Coast Guard Station in Cerritos was moved to its present location on Point Loma Boulevard. At that time, it was the only Coast Guard Station in central Los Angeles County. The station served as a dispatch center for law enforcement and firefighting operations throughout Southern California. In 1962, Coastal Security Force Headquarters (later called USCG Headquarters) was relocated from Oxnard to Cerritos. This new headquarters served as the primary headquarters for all aspects of coastal security throughout Southern California. It also housed important resources such as radar and sonar equipment used by the Coast Guard for maritime patrol and fisheries management efforts. In 1984, USCG Headquarters became part of US Customs Service headquarters when that agency merged with US Customs & Border Protection (USCBP). As part of this merger, USCG Headquarters assumed responsibility for all CBP functions located within Los Angeles County including but not limited to border patrol; customs patrols; information services; port security; migrant smuggling operations; and import/export inspections. Today, USCG Headquarters manages more than 1 million employees who provide essential support to U.S Customs Service missions across America’s 11 southern states plus Puerto Rico and Guam

The Coast Guard was founded on April 20, 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson in order to provide a military force for coastal defense. After World War II, the Coast Guard became an all-volunteer force and began providing security along the US coastline. In 1969, Congress passed the National Security Act Amendments of 1969 which assigned a single navy officer (the Rear Admiral) as the head of both the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Coast Guard. This change in leadership led to increased cooperation between both agencies. In 1990, Congress passed another act which designated the United States Customs Service (USCS) as an integral part of both agencies. This new arrangement allowed for cross-agency cooperation in various areas such as container security and customs enforcement. Today, the Coast Guard has over 6,000 active duty members and nearly 2 million reservists who serve full time or part time depending on assignments around the country. The service provides critical homeland security functions including search and rescue, law enforcement, maritime transportation services, polar icebreaker patrols and more. The Coast Guard also offers numerous specialties such as fisheries management (including oceanography), air traffic control and environmental protection. There have been many donations from citizens throughout America in order to support their favorite branch of our military! Below are some examples: In 1916, when it was first established that there would be a coast guard regiment within each state’s militia organization (as mandated by Section 8(a)) Congress authorized gifts from individuals within each state for use by that particular militia regiment only; no other federal agency could receive such gifts “in aid of its own general operations” [emphasis added]. Therefore any donation made to either USCGOULD go ONLY TO THE STATE'S MILITARY REGIMENT - not ANY OTHER ENTITY IN THAT STATE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE FROM CONGRESS [emphasis added]). This regulation remained in effect until 1938 when it was rewritten at section 208(b)(1) following recommendations from then-Secretary of Commerce James Gaffney [now under Secretary Elaine Chao]. At that time it was determined that any gift sent DIRECTLY TO THE COAST GUARD RESERVE might fall into enemy hands because Gift Recipients were forbidden FROM DISPLAYING THEIR GIFTS ON HIS/HER PERSON BUT WERE ALLOWED TO SHARE THEM WITH OTHER UNITED STATES OFFICERS UNDER A CAPITAL HONORS PROGRAM WHEN THEY PARTICIPATED IN OPERATIONS OR VISITED ANOTHER COUNTRY AS PART OF A COUNCIL OF INTEREST). So most donations we see nowadays come from people who are eithermilitary or have some connection with Militias like governors or senators
