Cerritos is located on the Central Coast of Southern California and is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Situated on Cerritos Mesa, it has been a major port for shipping goods from the Malibu Pier to inland markets for many years. In 2007, Cerritos became one of only a handful of cities in California to win an award from the National Association of Realtors as "Best Place to Work." The city won first place in both categories in 2008 and 2009. In addition to its role as an important transportation hub and bedroom community for Los Angeles County, Cerritos also has a strong economy that center around manufacturing and service industries such as information technology and healthcare. The history of Cerritos goes back over 120 years with settlers coming here from various parts of Northern Mexico including Chihuahua City (now Ciudad Juárez) and Durango. The first permanent settler here was James Irvine who arrived on July 12th 1876 when he organized what would become known as Rancho San Clemente which extended across present-day Ventura Boulevard north into Yorba Linda before eventually terminating near today's Interstate 5 interchange just east of downtown Santa Paula. Irvine developed his land into citrus groves that are still celebrated by locals today as one of their topgressive industries during this time period because it allowed him to sell his crops directly to consumers without paying middlemen such as transportation companies or growers' unions. This system allowed him to build up a large fortune which he reinvested into new land acquisitions and continued growth until 1925 when he sold much of his holdings southward along Pico Boulevard making way for what is now Downtown Santa Paula beneath Highway 101 between El Camino Real Way and Ventura Boulevard among other places Many people credit Irvine's success here with helping spur development along Pico Boulevard later becoming known as "The Business Parkway" after his namesake avenue subsequently followed suit but this story may be false given that there were several other influential rancho owners at the time who did not share in Irvine'sfortune . It should be noted though that while some believe that early movement away fromPicoBoulevard towards Interstate 5 may have been due primarily to economic reasons rather than any animosity between landownership groups., others maintain that freeway construction actually delayed commercial development along Pico until well after Irvine's death which likely contributed significantly thereto In 1923 another pioneer resident named Harry Hines set down roots here with his wife Lillie Mae following three weeks earlier when they crossed paths travelling through Paso Robles en route from Madera Peninsula where they had settled previous year . They soon started purchasing additional tracts within what would become known as Highland Park bounded by present day Airport Road east/west (the north side then being bordered by Harbor Drive), South Mountain Avenue (now Martin Luther King Jr.'s home street), Canoga Avenue (northwest corner), Arroyo Seca Boulevard (east side) – all now part Of Westchester Village Historic District – expanding their holdings even further until shortly before their deaths . Hines served two terms mayorofSanta Paula before moving onto larger things beyond agriculture during World War II while Lillie Mae continued working hard behind the scenes running her family’s businesses until her death in 1977 leaving behind an extensive Legacy including numerous donations unto local libraries throughout Southern California ..
