Cerritos, California is a city in and the county seat of Los Angeles County, California. The population of Cerritos was 168,041 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Southern California. Cerritos was founded on October 14, 1887 by John Smeaton and his brother-in-law Augustus Saint George Wright as a small citrus village on the east side of Palos Verdes Peninsula. In 1915, Cerritos became an incorporated town with a population of 20 people. On December 15, 1920, it became an unincorporated community when its incorporation was rescinded by the state government because it did not meet requirements for municipalityhood. The name "Cerrito" originated from Spanish settlements that were located on or near what are now parts of downtownLos Angeles and central Cerritos Beach neighborhoods; these settlements were known as "Rancho San Pedro" (Spanish for "PR Rancho Santa Paula"), "Rancho El Cid", and others due to their location close to Mission Bayou which formed part of Rancho San Pedro's eastern boundary. The first post office in Cerritos opened in 1892 under the name Oceanside; it closed in 1893 after only six months because there wasn't enough mail to accommodate everyone living in Cerritos at that time. The first permanent settler in Cerritos was John Smeaton who moved from Huntington Beach into what is now Old Town Anaheim while he awaited grants from the US government to establish himself as a leader Inland Empire citrus farmer. One grant arrived on November 5th, 1894 but noone took up residence because they had no land grant yet! On October 14th1887John Smeaton started trading goods with Japanese immigrants at what is now called Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street when he met Augustus Saint George Wright who also traded goods with them
