Cerritos was founded on January 14, 1887 by the town of La Jolla and it became part of the City of San Diego on February 4, 1903. The population of Cerritos grew rapidly during the 20th century due to its location near military bases and other industrial sites. Today, Cerritos is one of the most populous cities in San Diego County with over 100,000 residents. The city has a rich history that can be traced back to its namesake; Spanish explorer Alonso de Almagro named it "Cerrito". In 1881, Mexican settlers arrived in what is now Cerrito and organized themselves into a small village. This village was destroyed by an earthquake in 1883 which left many people homeless. However, within three years there were already hundreds of Mexican immigrants living in Cerrito and their descendants continue to live here today. In 1888, John Sutter erected his first rancho at present-day Kearny Mesa for his cattle drive Rancho Santa Anita. This ranchero became important because it allowed Sutter easy access to land east of the Carlsbad Canal for building new mines and mills. By 1898 there were over 50 businesses operating in Cerritos with employes totaling 1,500 people including 150 women who labored as seamstresses at garment factories along Fifth Avenue south of Interstate 5 (now known as State Route 163). A year later two large tracts were sold adjoining Sutter's original rancho; one to Lawrence Balfour who built several magnificent homes at 8201 Third Street (the current site of Pacific beach), while another parcel went to George Wickersham who leased it from Sutter for lumber storage purposes before becoming owner/operator of Northridge Mines & Paper Company west of Interstate 5 between Balboa Park Boulevard and Mirabeau Drive (then called State Route 158). The arrival during this time of Japanese immigrants also altered things somewhat; many members of the early Japanese community had been brought up Protestant but soon converted to Buddhism after coming ashore on Unexpected Island near Point Loma about 1902 when they met American missionaries seeking converts - something they found difficult to do since they could not read or write English well enough!
