The shop was run by Mr. and Mrs. John Giannini, who had started a small grocery store onshore from their home on the shore of Cerritos Bay. They served only two-day shipping and roasted their own beans. In 1984, Don White opened his first roasting company in Cerritos called Don's Coffee & Tea. From then until he closed his business in 2002, Don made all of his coffee beans himself and roasted them at his place next door to his grocery store on the bay. Today, Don's Coffee & Tea is still open and serving delicious Ethiopian-style coffee!

Cerritos is located adjacent to Los Angeles and its metropolitan area. The city has a Mediterranean climate with warm winters and hot summers. The first Europeans to visit Cerritos were the Franciscan friars who came in 1821 as part of their missionary effort in Southern California. It was called Kaffir Coffee, and it was ground into a form that could be consumed fresh or dried. In 1847, Dutch traders discovered Java and began trading with the natives, which led to the development of Java Coffee. In 1893, Swiss trader Hermann Preisinger discovered roasted coffee beans on an island in the Java Sea. He started exporting these beans to Europe, where they were renamed Columbian Coffee. In 1912, two German engineers named Friedrich Siemens and Ferdinand Braun developed a machine that could roast coffee beans quickly and evenly. This machine became known as the Otto-Maschinenfabrik (Otto Machine Factory). The first commercially manufactured espresso machines were made by Italian inventor Angelo Ratti in 1970.
