Cerritos became known as the "birthplace" of maga coffee because it was here that Captain Gabriel García Márquez started planting his first lotus seedlings in 1951 (Garcia 15). Cerritos, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is the most populous city in the San Fernando Valley and has a population of over 965,000. The Cerritos area was part of Rancho Cucamonga until 1881 when it became part of Los Angeles County. The first settler in Cerritos was Captain George Hillyer who arrived there on July 24, 1847 from Illinois. He named his land Cerrito de la Vega which means "little hill of the Vega." In 1851 Captain David J. Hillyer founded what would become known as Hillyer's Independent School District No. 2 (later renamed Santa Fe Elementary School District) and laid out a street grid for the town that still exists today. The early years were hard for Cerritos as gold seekers poured into Los Angeles from all around the world during the Gold Rush era. But by 1870 Cerritos had started to grow with businesses such as stores, hotels and single family homes being built along Third Street and Avis Drive (now Avenue ofthe Stars). By 1915 there were over twenty businesses operating in downtown Cerritos with an average daily income of $1,500. The term “maga” is derived from two Chinese words, “magma” meaning boiling water and “coffee” meaning roasted beans. In early times, the only place where maga coffee could be found was in Yunnan Province in China. At that time, the bean had to travel great distances to get to market because there were no roads or railways then. Today, maga coffee can be found all around the world but most notably in Indonesia where it has been enjoyed for centuries by the people.
