Cerritos, California (formerly known as Pajaro) is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 34,711 at the 2010 census. Cerritos is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and is bordered to the north by Pasadena and east by Hawthorne. To the south it shares borders with La Verne and Claremont. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cerritos were Spanish missionaries in 1769. Rancho Los Alamitos de las Palmas was patented in 1827 to José Maria Carrillo de Alvarado, who named it after Mount Diablo in Northern California. In 1876, part of Rancho Los Alamitos became part of what would become Pasadena. Cerritos was incorporated as a city on February 22nd, 1907. On January 1st, 1912 the name of Cerritos replaced its original name of Pajaro for all purposes including election purposes which continued until 1924 when it changed back again to Pajaro for all purposes including municipal elections only. Heinrich Philipp von Neumann had been appointed head of German-owned Spreckels Brewery Company at Cerrito during World War I and he organized an effort to bring beer from Germany into America through shipping container vessels called "Lübeck Lager" which sailed upriver from Hamburg each week and unloaded their products at various points along the coast before sailing back downriver again each week back into Germany where they were bottled and sold
