Cerritos, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of Californias Central Coast region. The population of Cerritos was 586 as of the 2010 census. The name Cerritos comes from Spanish, meaning "pearl beach." The first European to visit this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 when he and his ship La Niña explored the Bay of California. In 1847, prospector Jedediah Smith discovered gold at what is now known as Prospect Hill in Cerritos. Mining started in earnest in 1868 with the discovery of rich goldmining claims around present-day Brushy Mesa and northward along Mulberry Street to its junction with State Route 101 (now Hearst Avenue). By 1870, over 4 million dollars had been mined from various mines throughout the town. Cerritos became a city on January 20, 1916 after it was annexed by Modesto. Cerritos experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location as a naval airbase for aircraft production at nearby Monterey Naval Air Station. The amount of military activity conducted in and around Cerritos increased ten-fold between 1942 and 1945; including bombing raids against enemy targets within and outside the town itself as well as strikes against Japanese plants within 310 miles (500 kilometers) of Los Angeles. Citrus fruits were also processed here into pickles, jams and jellies for use by U.S forces ashore during World War II. The post-war years were difficult for cerritos; however, there was some progress made during this time including the opening of a grocery store in 1951 and a hospital in 1957. Additionally, ceramic tiles were becoming more common throughout California during this time and were brought to cerritos from other parts of the state; this led to increased development around ceramic tile businesses such as Ritchey & Myers Incorporated (now known as Watkins Tile). In 1974, ceririto voters approved Measure M which created educational funding for local schools; this helped spur further economic development around Cerritos Boulevard and other areas of town. In 1984, ceririto voters passedMeasure J which provided funds for infrastructure projects such as roads and water systems; this helped improve public transportation options available in the town center area.
