Cerritos, California is a city in San Diego County, California that was founded in 1887. The population of the City of Cerritos was 161,221 as of the 2010 Census. The city is located on the eastern edge of San Diego County and is bordered by Tijuana to the south and east, Carlsbad to the north and west, and Escondido to the northwest. The region now known as Cerritos was first inhabited by Native Americans such as the Miwok and Shoshone before being explored by Spanish colonists in 1769. In 1847, Mexican land grants were given to Juan Bautista Alvarado who named it after General José Joaquín de Alvarado who had fought against Spain in Yucatán Peninsula during War of Independence. The name "Alvarado" came from Spanish general Agustín de Alvarado who led an expedition against Mexico in1806-07 at what is now Mission Viejo. In 1881, Cerritos became part of citrus country when Rancho Santa Fe Californias (now part of Orange County) was established near present day Garden Grove with land grant from Mexican governor Pio Pico. A year later two other ranches were acquired: Rancho Los Alamitos (now part of Riverside) and Rancho Carmelo (now part of Desert Sun). However, it wasn't until 1906 when a new water main arrived and made irrigation possible for these ranches that agriculture began to take hold hereabouts; however it wasn't until 1915 when cotton became a major crop that development really started happening hereabouts with many small businesses opening up around this time including groceries like Safeway which opened its first store in 1965 just west of downtown on Broadway Avenue/Pine Street.
