The Cerritos Naval Air Station was established in 1936 and served as a base for the Navy's carrier-based aviation squadron, the USS Lexington (CV-2). The station was also home to the Marine Aircraft Group 15. In 1942, the airfield became an operational naval airbase under Naval Air Service command. The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor led to increased activity at NAS Cerritos and its affiliated fields. The Lexington Carrier Air Wing operated from NAS Cerritos during World War II; it was disbanded in 1945. In 1951, NAS Cerritos became a subordinate unit of Naval Fleet Air Command; it remained an active naval airbase until 1972 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 1978, NAS Cerritos reopened as part of the Los Angeles Naval Base Complex; it has continued to serve as an operational naval airbase since that time. Today, NAS Cerritos is one of three active military installations within the City of Los Angeles proper - another being Joint Base Simi Valley which houses USMCB Operation Neptune's Spear and USMCB Camp Pendleton - making it one of city's most visible civilian facilities.
Cerritos, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 89,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino and the largest city in Riverside County. The Cerritos metropolitan area has a population of 1,325,911 as of 2018. The original inhabitants of Cerritos were Native Americans who lived near the present-day mouth of the Penasquitoes River on what is now known as West Coast Boulevard. They hunted mammoths and other large animals that browse on inland plants during the summer months while they gathered shellfish in the fall and winter. In 1827, Don José de Alvarado granted land to Juan Bautista Betancourt for $5 per acre (0.183 hectare). This grant made Cerritos an independent municipality with its own government and court system until 1857 when it became part of Rancho Cucamonga The first post office was established in Cerritos on November 6, 1858 by Hiram Sutter under license from Mexico City. The name Cerritos may have originated with Mexican settlers who called it "Cerrito" which means "flat" or "level". A second post office was opened in 1915 by Hahnemann Underwood at East Broadway and North First Street; this facility closed after one year due to inadequate mail service.
