In 1907, Cerritos became an incorporated town and remains one of Southern California's oldest cities. The first post office for Cerritos opened on November 3rd, 1892. The name of the town originated from Rancho San Gabriel which was named for General José de la Guerra y Cámpora who located part of his ranch there in 1781. At that time there were over two dozen ranches within miles of Cerritos including Rancho San Gabriel where General La Guerra had built his home while stationed at Fort Tejon during Mexican–American War era. In 1907, Cerritos became an incorporated town after passage of a state law that allowed municipalities to become independent under certain conditions such as having a population of twenty thousand residents or less and no directirtation from any county or state government other than that served by its own police force and fire department
