Cerritos, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 81,913. The Cerritos area was first settled by Spaniards in 1795 and named Rancho Mission Viejo de Santa Ana de las Palmas. In 1824, it became part of Mexico and was renamed Ciudad Juárez. It reverted to its original name in 1848 after US president James K. Polk announced that Los Angeles would be called "Ciudad Juárez" because all Mexicans who lived there were deported to Mexico City. The city's current name comes from the Spanish word "cerrito" meaning fat sheep or goats and "viajero" meaning traveler or pilgrim. The downtown district is home to several large shopping malls as well as several small businesses including Rosie’s Diner and Mexicali Mexican Cafe which has been open since 1922

Cerritos, California is located in the southern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. It is bordered by Pasadena to the east and west and Lancaster to the north. The city was founded on November 3, 1896 by James Irvine, who named it for his Cerritos Ranch in what is now Orange County. The economy of Cerritos has been variously based on agriculture, manufacturing, services, and tourism. Manufacturing include Curtiss Aviation products, Owens & Talbot watches, and Toyota vehicles; service sectors have included trucking and restaurants. The city has a population of over 166,000 as of 2018. The first evidence of human activity in Cerritos dates back to 10700 BC when Hohokam people built a small village known as Uva Loma within present-day Cerritos Boulevard east of town. This site would become the nucleus for later communities such as Oxnard and Torrance around AD 1000. From AD 950 until AD 1100 there were no permanent settlements located within present-day Cerritos boundaries; however periodic trade missions from Mexico City brought along artifacts with Indian influences which became available for purchase or acquisition by settlers in this area during this time period. In 1881 James Irvine formed a partnership with J B Smeaton to develop land near where Palmdale now stands for $2 per acre (the price then doubled every two years). On April 6, 1882 Irvine sold his share in the partnership to Smeaton’s partner John Keane who moved their business operations from Rialto into what would eventually become known as downtown Cerritos – an area that still contains many remnants of Irvine’s original business ventures including his original store building which still stands today at Third Street West and North Moorpark Avenue
Cerritos was founded in 1887 by George W. Cerritos and his wife Anna. The first post office was established in Cerritos on December 7, 1888. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a store. By 1912, the town had grown to include a grocery, bakery, hotel, and several other businesses. In 1916, the Cerritos Consolidated School District was created and Cerritos became its cornerstone district. In 1928, the CerritosJennie Ford Aviation Museum opened with aircraft from World War I to World War II on display.
