Chico, California is a small town in Northern California. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. It is located in Shasta County on the right bank of the river Oroville. The name Chico comes from the Mono word "chi-co," meaning "horse farm." The first Europeans to encounter this area were members of Captain Dolores's party that explored and charted the Sacramento River in 1824. It was not until 1868 when gold was discovered in nearby Sutter Valley that Chico became an important center for mining and cattle ranching. Today, much of downtown Chico is still filled with businesses and residences dating back to these early days. The economy of Chico has been bolstered by two major highways: I-5 and State Route 99W which run through its center. These highways have helped to bring jobs and tourists to areas such as downtown, shopping centers, and other attractions within easy reach of both San Francisco Bay Area commuters and visitors looking for a more rural experience than urban areas offer. A third benefit of being close to big city life is that there are few if any traffic snarls typical of larger metropolitan areas. In 2006, President George W Bush presented a brand new C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane to RAF Castleford in England as a gift from the USAF. This aircraft is one of only two in existence and has been used extensively by NATO for relief operations following earthquakes or hurricanes. In 2009, General David Petraeus became Commanding General United States Forces Afghanistan (USFAG) after he took over from Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal who had led USFAG since early 2007 when USFAG transitioned from its predecessor organization United States Central Command (CENTCOM). As Commanding General USFAG Petraeus vowed to increase American troop presence in Afghanistan while working towards building an Afghan government that can serve Afghans as well as Americans. One of his first orders was to send out a delegation led by Air Force Major Gen James Amos “ Jimmy” Dempsey who visited Kabul on November 2nd 2009 just one day after taking office as Commander United States Forces Afghanistan

Chico is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three centuries. Chico became a city on July 15, 1873, when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the California state legislature. The city was named after Mexican general José Antonio de Chico y Ocampo who died in 1821 while fighting against GeneralNapoleón Bonaparte. Chico's history can be traced back to two small villages that were located near what is now downtown Chico: Coyote Flat and Bear Butte. These villages were founded by members of the Ohlone tribe in 1777 and 1778 respectively. In 1832, John Sutter discovered gold at Sutter's Mill outside of Chico and began mining operations in the area which soon created many jobs for men and women local farmers. In 1849-1850 Governor Manuel Michelin established a military post at Red Bluff on Humboldt Bay in order to monitor gold prospecting activity from sea level up to 12 feet (3 meters) deep; this caused some people to speculate that there was no gold buried beneath the red earth at all! The first post office opened in 1851 with Wm Postmaster Cook as its first director; it closed in 1861 due to lack of customers. In 1862 citizens voted to name their new city after José Antonio de Chico y Ocampo following his death during battle against General Napoleon Bonaparte during Mexico's War for Independence. The original name was changed back to Chico on July 15th, 1873 after incorporation into California state government under then-Governor Hiram Johnson Johnson along with City Councilman George Laddsbury as Mayor . The original downtown business district included several grocery stores including Jardine & Mathews (now Macy’s), Post Office Stores (later Peoples National Bank), Bakersfield Custom House No 4 (now Bechtel Place), La Quinta Hotel and numerous other businesses including Notch’s Clothing Store which still stands today corner Main Street between First Avenue and University Avenue . From its inception until 1909, he Daily Californian paper served as both city editor and mayor; he also served as an assessor from 1865 until his death in 1889 . After his death municipal court proceedings were moved out of downtown because they could not be held within one block of each other due courthouse space available only east or west of Market Street -thus ending any hope that downtown would becomethe center of town again following Johnson’s death four years later In 1906 Downtown Business District boundaries were changed once again when blocks east/west of Market Street became part Of City Hall although most commercial districts remain centered around present day First Avenue & Main Street
