The history of the United States Army's gift to Chico, California begins in 1888 when General George C. Marshall ordered the erection of a military academy in that city. The Chico Military Academy was opened in 1892 and soon became a model for American military academies. In 1907, the Legislature passed an act providing financial assistance to establish two more military academies-the Sacramento Naval Academy and the Southern Californian Military Institute-in order to match the increasing demand for cadets from various states. In 1914, General John J. Pershing ordered all American forces in Europe into World War I, and as a result, many veteran soldiers from Chico were called up to serve on active duty in that conflict. Upon America's entry into World War II, General George S. Patton recommended that Chico be chosen as the site of one of America's three major airfields-the others being Los Angeles and San Diego-and this recommendation was accepted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 5th, 1944. The construction of Air Force Base Palmdale began on September 1st, 1942 and finally completed on November 7th,-a magnificent show ofAmerican engineering accomplishment during those early days of jet travel! In 1946, after years of planning and construction, Air Force Base Palmdale became an operational USAF base with its own hospital complex which still stands today (now part of Kaiser Permanente). After Vietnam Veterans Affairs Medical Center opened its doors here in 1969 (!), AFB Palmdale quickly became one of Northern California's most important healthcare providers! In 1998/1999 there was much rejoicing when our very own Major Tom replaced retiring Lieutenant Colonel James Larkin as Commandant at CHICO MILITARY ACADEMY! On October 2nd 1999 Major Tom handed over charge to LtCol Mark Ahern who has been with us since day one! As we approach our 50th anniversary next year (2002), it is exciting to think about how far we have come since then... including some truly amazing new developments such as "Chico Place" - now home to both our boys' basketball teams (formerly located at Northridge High School)...and also our girls' soccer team !
