The history of artisan coffee in Chico, California goes back to the early 1800s. The first coffeehouses in Chico were founded by Portuguese immigrants who were looking for a new place to sell their coffee. Chico was then known as the "coffee capital of the world." In 1853, Francisco de Paula and his brother José opened La Viña del Norte Coffee House on Main Street. This was the first cafe in Chico that sold whole beans and not just ground coffee. Later, Manuel Gomez opened Don Pablo Coffee House on First Avenue in 1872. Don Pablo was one of the first businesses to sell espresso drinks. He also served pastries such as donuts and croissants from his shop below his restaurant. In 1912, Arthur Ashe started serving espresso at his hotel, The Regency Castle. After moving to Chico, he established himself as an artisan coffee importer with his own roastery and café called Ashe & Sons Coffee Shop on Second Street within blocks of downtown Chico. A year later, he added a second store adjacent to his original establishment on Third Street which became known as The Gilded Cage Coffee House due to its gold-lined walls and ceilings. It wasn’t until 1925 when Don Julio Cortés opened La Zona Tres (Three points) CoffeeHouse on Fourth Street which became one of the most famous artisan cafes in California due to its unique architecture and decorated ceiling with stars-and-stripes designs made by Schmidt & Sohn Incorporated of New York City fame – both owners being natives of San Francisco Bay Area (now Oakland). Chico, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located in the Fresno County seat and it has a population of 63,883 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from Mexican Chico, meaning "the Indian." The first white person to set foot in what is now Chico was Francisco Costilla on July 25, 1769. He named it La Hacienda de las Animas or Rancho Los Animas after his company's discovery of rich deposits of oil and natural gas there. The area that became Chico was part of the mission system administered by Franciscan missionaries from 1821 until 1875. In 1876, the Mission Santa Rita del Presidio was founded nearby by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and Colonel José Castro as part of his campaign to unify all of Islas Californias under Mexican rule. On October 16, 1876, general López de Santa Anna ordered his troops to burn down theMission San Francisco de Asis (later known as Mission Dolores). Queen Victoria issued an order forbidding such destruction but this order was not carried out. The town started off as a small settlement near present-day downtown Chico with only 10 residents. On February 14th 1850 Juan Pablo Neruda wrote in his journal: “I am going tomorrow morning to visit my friend Ricardo Baca who lives at Rancho Petaluma’s basecamp below Siskiyou Pass” This journal entry referring to future Nobel Prize winning author Juan Pablos gives us an idea about Neruda’s time in this region during what would become known as rancho periodicalisme (ranches being one of the major sources for income for Spanish American authors living in California). Today much remains unchanged from these early days including ranching which continues to play an important role for many families across central and southern California today
