The Coast Guard has been providing service to the people of Chico, California for over 80 years. The Coast Guard Gift History can be traced back to 1912 when a group of men from the Chico Station opened up an unofficial store in what is now the city center. This store was known as the "Gift Shop" and sold items such as supplies and clothing to local civilians and military personnel. In 1916, the Coast Guard station was relocated to present day Point Reyes National Seashore. Here, they started selling food and drinks to visitors on high tide. In 1948, the Coast Guard station became a permanent location and began offering tours of their facilities for tourists. Tours are still offered today! In 1969, Chico City Council passed an ordinance recognizing the Coast Guard's contributions to our community. This ordinance designated May 1st as "Coast Guardsmen Week" in order to celebrate both our coast guard history and our relationship with them today. In 2007, we hosted our own Coastal Guardsmen Festival which featured many activities including concerts, parade Float Day, golf tournaments, bike races & more!

The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Chico" is Spanish for "the place where Mono people used to live." Chico got its start as a post office in 1849. In 1870, Citizens School opened and served students from Chico until 1971 when it became public school district property. In 1907, the first high school in Chico was built. Today there are four high schools in Chico: Buena Park High School (opened in 1928), Mission Bay High School (opened in 1959), Sierra View High School (opened in 1958), and West Coast High School (opened in 1978). The economy of Chico is based on agriculture with a dominant role for dairy farming. There are also some small manufacturing businesses such as food processing plants and agricultural equipment dealerships. The town has two airports: one serving regional airline passengers and cargo, the other providing local airport service to locals and tourists. Some major employers include Air America Airlines, ChevronTexaco, Intel Corporation, Southern Pacific Railroad Company, Bureau of Land Management Agricultural Service Agency, United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Administration This community has seen many changes over time including an increase in Hispanics moving into town from outlying areas during the early 1980s; a decline during that decade; several rounds of growth starting around 1990; and steady decline since 2000 due to decreasing enrollment rates among Latinos within town limits as well as increased competition from more established Hispanic towns throughout central California
When the United States Coast Guard was founded in 1790, it was a small and ineffective force. However, over time, the Coast Guard became one of America’s most important and respected institutions. The Coast Guard has been involved in many major missions throughout its history, including helping to protect our coastline from damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rescuing sailors during Hurricane Rita in 1997, and more recently providing support during the 2016 presidential campaign. The Coast Guard gift tradition began long ago when volunteers from different towns on the coast donated their time and talents to help make sure that everyone on our coast was treated fairly. Today, there are many organizations dedicated to giving back to the Coast Guard through donations or volunteerism. Some of these organizations include: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which helps fund research into maritime weather conditions; The Friends of the Coastal Park Foundation (FOCP), which restores coastal habitats; and The San Francisco Maritime Museum (SFMOMA), which provides visitors with unique insight into coastal history.
