They named their new settlement after Chico, a small town in central Argentina that they had visited on their way to California. In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico and set out to populate it. The initial settlers were farmers and their families who cleared land and built homes. However, within a few years of arriving, many of these people died from disease or accidents while trying to explore what was awaiting them. One of the earliest pioneers to settle in Chico was Aarons Hillman who purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of downtown in 1852.
