The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Collection at the California Museum of the Marine Corps preserves and exhibits a diversity of Marines' donated items, including clothing, tools, equipment and memorabilia. The collection began in 1941 when Corporal Harry L. Price donated a shirt to the Corps. Since then, more than 2,500 items have been donated by Marines and their families. Since World War II, the Corps has appreciated donations from civilians as well as Marines. For example, in 1984, Master Sergeant Lawrence E. Whitedon offered his home for use as a storage unit for the Corps' supplies during an overseas deployment. In 2000, Lance Corporal Darrell Lunsford contributed four rifles to Operation Noble Eagle which was conducted to provide support forOperation Desert Storm. Many other donations have been made throughout history by Marines and their families in support of the Military Sealift Command (MCC) mission or local events such as Memorial Day services or Christmas parties. The City of Chico, California is located in the Mojave Desert and was founded on December 21, 1861 by Mormon pioneers. The city was named after the then-de facto capital of California, Sacramento. The first post office in Chico opened on March 15, 1872. In 1915, the city became a state capital when it was added to the United States territories of Nevada and Arizona. Chico reached its peak population around 1930 with over 150,000 people living there. However, due to economic depression and other factors such as World War II and an influx of Mexican immigrants into the area, Chico's population dropped precipitously in the 1940s and 1950s. Today, most residents of Chico live scattered throughout surrounding communities within or outside of town limits. AIM members from both inside and outside of California settled in what is now central California during this time period; some continue to reside here today as well as those who relocated during that era’s events including Operation Paperclip which brought many top Nazis to America during World War II through various secret programs run by Nazi intelligence officers working inside American institutions like Rockefeller Foundation
