As part of this merger, Chevron acquired two oil refineries in Chico. These refineries were later renamed Chevron-Texaco and Texaco-Chico Natural gas stations opened throughout the city to support these new refineries. In 1951, General Electric purchased a controlling interest in Texaco Corporation from Gulf Oil Corporation. In 1851, Chico became a post office and the first in California. The United States Congress established the Mexican War as a war to end Mexican independence and gain control over Mexico's wealth. To finance this war, the United States raised taxes on goods exported to Mexico. This tax increase caused a recession in California and other states that contributed to the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865, after Confederate forces captured Richmond, Virginia, the Union army moved into northern Virginia and began besieging Petersburg, Virginia. On December 12th of that year, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg without any fighting or parades; this event is considered by many historians as one of America's greatest defeats ever due to its causes: bad public opinion following the American Civil War
Chico, California is a city located in Northern California. The population was 168,536 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Madera County and the second largest town in Yosemite Valley, after Yosemite National Park. The first Europeans to visit Chico were missionaries from Spain in 1827. In 1849, as part of the Mexican–American War, General Santa Anna sold Chico to Antonio Bandera for $5 million dollars. Spanish settlers also arrived during this time period and founded a number of small villages around what is now Chico. From 1858 until 1862, when it became a state of California, Chico was known as "Domingo". In 1863 it changed its name to "Chico" after the then governor of Alta California Fernando de la Torre y Peña (1807-1876). The name has been continuously used since that time by both Californians and Mexican nationals alike. In 1865 Henry Sutter built his first mill on the Sacramento River near present-day downtown Chico. This made him one of the early pioneers in what would become chocolates manufacturing with his company Sutter's Chocolate Company being founded in 1867 by John McAfee and Nathan Myhrvold (founder of Microsoft). After World War II many factories closed due to prohibition but reopened again following repeal of Prohibition in 1933 which led to an increased demand for chocolate products exported from America. After several years with no new production facilities announced there was speculation that cocoa beans might have gone bad but this speculation was unfounded and it actually took another ten years before all new manufacturers emerged from obscurity into what is now one of America's leading chocolate industries with more than fifty brands operating under one banner today including Nestle SA & Co., Unilever plc., Hershey Corporation Ltd., Swiss Chalet AG & Others

Chico, California is one of the oldest settlements in the state of California. The first known reference to Chico was made by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 when he mentioned a small village on the coast named "Chilo." In 1769, Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores) in present-day Chico. The mission was located on what is now Third Street and Broadway. In 1821, Mexican General José Joaquín Cerón abandoned Chico for unknown reasons. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, Ulysses S. Grant's forces burned down part of Mission San Francisco de Asís. This event helped spur development around the mission as well as new settlers moving into Chico from all over California. At this time, it was one of the most thriving towns in Alta California. By 1850, however, it had shrunk to its current size due to numerous factors such as gold rushes and natural disasters that struck the area including major floods and fires in 1859 and 1862 respectively. During World War II, there were multiple air raids on Chico; one which resulted in damage to several buildings inside Mission San Francisco de Asís including a chapel which still stands today standing largely unharmed despite being extensively damaged by firebombing during WWII. The post-war years saw an increase in population growth with people commuting into town from surrounding rural areas; although housing prices remained high relative to other Northern Californian cities at this time. However, urban sprawl has begun to take hold with more development taking place within walking distance of central business districts making access increasingly difficult for much older residents who live behind fences or gates rather than within easy reach of city amenities like grocery stores and public transportation options

It is the largest city in Fresno County and the third-largest city in California. Chico's namesake was Father Francisco Javier Menéndez de Avilés y Mendaña, who founded Mission San José (1772) and mission chapel in what is now Downtown Chico. In 1847, Rancho Altaona was granted to Antonio Maria Pico by Mexican governor José Joaquín de Arguelles. However, land grants were not Become effective until after 1848 when Mexico acquired full ownership of all of California from Spain. prior to 1850 there were two small settlements called "Altaona" on both sides of the track leading south from Sacramento Valley to Tubac Reservoir where today's University of Southern California campus lies. In March 1850 an ad for a rancho named Rancho Chico was published in The Californian newspaper and soon contracts were being taken up for its purchase by prospectors General James Wolkoff and Captain Auguste Antoine Moreau of the French forces under Spanish general Mariano Vallejo during their campaign against American settlers known as The Great Gold Rush. On July 14th, 1851 Ignacio Hidalgo submitted his petition to Mexican President Agustín de Iturbide for annexation of northern Sonoma County into Mexico as part of that country’s efforts to modernize its eastern border following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Iturbide replied on October 9th that there could be no annexation without first gaining approval from Emperor Napoleon III through his Secretary of State Manuel Michelinie.
