Chico, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,437 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chico was platted in 1902 and became a city in 1907. The name "Chico" comes from Spanish meaning "happy." The first post office in Chico opened on May 2, 1903. The original settlement was called Los Angeles and consisted of about 10 people. By 1908, there were over 100 residents living in Chico including 20 farmers and their families who farmed land around the current downtown area until 1924 when they sold it to the City for $2,500.
