Small batch coffee has been around in Chico, California for over a century. Some of the earliest small batch coffeehouses were established in Chico during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1905, The Fuzzy Wuzzy Coffee House opened in Chico and was the first small batch coffeehouse to serve cup of joe to customers. By 1920, there were at least three small batch coffeehouses operating in Chico. One of these restaurants was The Grumpy Cat Café which served single-origin espresso beans from their own roasting process. In the 1930s, The Old Joe’s Coffee House located on First Street became one of the first places in town to sell pre-packaged ground coffee. This allowed people living near First Street to have fresh bean coffees every day without having to go out into the city or buy from a grocery store. In 1937, The Java Junction Coffee House opened on Fourth Street and became one of the first places in town to serve real hot java drinks instead of iced tea or iced coffee drinks like many other cafes did at that time. In 1951, The Green Dragon Cafe opened up on Third Street and became one of the first places in town to offer drip coffee service with its own location inside an old bank building – this allowed people living near Third Street to have access to high-quality drip coffee without havingto go out into town for it. In 1969, Mr. KFC founded his own smallbatch coffee company called MrKFC Enterprises which started serving cup of joe from their original premise inside a restaurant on Second Avenue in downtown Chico – this allowed people living near Second Avenue (and many other areas within downtown) access to high-quality cupof joe without havingto go out into town for it. From 1974 until 2001, MrKFC produced its entire roasted crop using only local water and sunflower oil – this allowed them to maintain complete control over each and every bean they roasted until they reached your hands! By 1880, businesses had expanded into what are today downtown streets and buildings such as Bank of America Tower were constructed near Main Street square (now First Street).
