Chino Hills, California is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The population was 23,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Covina–Montebello–Hollywood, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chino Hills is known for its flower gardens and golf courses. The first human settlements in what would become Chino Hills date back to 1894 when two brothers, Hiram and George Chino bought some land in present-day Montebello from José Santos Alvarado. In 1912, John Swayne purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of property north of Chino Hills from Hiram Chino for $850. That same year saw the opening of Hacienda de los Olivos by developer Edwin Baeza and local citrus grower James Waddell on 8 acres (3 ha). The Olivos estate became one of Southern California's most important citrus estates with more than 2 million pounds (1 million kg) grown between 1913 and 1924. Baeza sold his interest in the estate in 1925 to Dwight D Eisenhower who used it as a summer home until he moved into presidential quarters at Gettysburg National Military Park during World War II. In 1927, real estate mogul Julius Rosenwald acquired 8 acres (3 ha) southeast of Hacienda de los Olivos from Waddell for $500 an acre ($27 per sq mi). Rosenwald had been impressed by Baeza's orange groves while visiting Los Angeles and decided to invest in oranges himself instead of selling them directly to consumers via mail order. After purchasing Hacienda de las Brisas from Waddell in 1928, Rosenwald renamed it "Chino Hills" after his farm near Clarksburg, West Virginia where he grew up on Long Island Sound before moving to America in 1902. Rosenwald continued expanding "Chino Hill" into what is now Montebello with other purchases including 3/4 mile (1 km) east of Hacienda de las Brisas across Loma Prieta Creek; 1 mile (1 km) northeast along Deer Path Road through rolling hillsatherine Macdonald leased 4 acres (16 sq m) lot #4 from United Artists Film Company for $5 per month back then; 5 acres (~20 hectares or 80% ) adjacent to #4 on undeveloped BLM land adjacent to United Artists' studio complex now known as Miramar Ranch; 2 miles (.6 km) northwest along Encinitas Boulevard past vineyards owned by Harry Goldenman which stretched all the way downwind into Ventura County; then 2 more miles (.6 km), south along La Brea Avenue past Hollywood Boulevard Studios until arriving at its current location off Western Avenue just beyond Interstate 605 exit number 26A approximately 12 minutes driving time from downtown Los Angeles using I-605 eastbound lanes approaching SR 165 southbound exit ramp served by US 101 westbound lanes approaching I-805 northbound lanes
