On March 12th 1893 Lillie Kapp purchased a Smith & Wesson No 2 Service Revolver from Capt J Fenton commanding 3rd battalion 5th division San Diego Infantry Volunteers Militia Regiment located at Camp Kearny near present day Porter Ranch[5]. The name Chino Hills comes from two places: Chino Creek and Chino Heights. The creek was originally named for Juan Ponce de León's rancho (land grant) of Rancho Chínomego near what is now Pomona. The hills were called "Chinomego" because of their high altitude and steep slopes. In 1887, a post office was established at chinómego and it continued to be used until 1915 when it was moved to its current location. The name Chinómego originated with José del Castillo who donated land for the town in 1892 while he was governor of Alta California. In 1907, John Sutter founded his citrus empire by acquiring 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land south of downtown Los Angeles on which he built an orchard and citrus processing plants that became one of the largest in the world. Street names in honor of Sutter include Sutter Boulevard and Sutter Canyon Blvd..
