Chino Hills is a city in California, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Eastman. The population was 27,878 at the 2010 census. Chino Hills is part of the San Gabriel Valley. The first people to live in what is now Chino Hills were the Eastmans, who arrived from New York City in 1852. They built a small cabin on a hill near present day Mission Road and completed their trials as farmers by growing wheat, barley, peas and other vegetables for local markets; they also raised cattle and sheep. In 1875 George Eastman met some Mexicans working on his farm and became interested in their culture and language so he erected a small wooden frame house to serve as his Mexican cultural center (known today as the El Rancho Museum). A new town was born when work began on the Los Angeles & San Bernardino Railroad in 1879. The name of the new town was chosen because it sounded like "Chinatown" – Chino being an old Japanese name for "hill." The citizens of Chino Hills voted to change their name to Chino Hills after hearing about another new community that had been formed called Azusa Heights west of Pasadena. In 1882 John Sutter came across land south of Exposition Park that he thought would be perfect for farming because it had good soil, good climate, low tuition rates at local colleges (the first college degrees given out in California), ample water resources (as well as Bristow trees) and no competing communities nearby! With this purchase he founded what would become known as Chino Hills Farms—now one of Northern California's most renowned agricultural properties with over 350 acres irrigated using camel urine irrigation systems which allowed him to produce over 100 crops per acre! Today there are many businesses and eateries located within walking distance of each other within Annandale Estates Neighborhood including David Chang's Momofuku restaurant (originally serving only sushi), Trader Joe's grocery store, Chuck E Cheese®, Dairy Queen®, Starbucks Coffee*, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer*, Safeway Grocery Store* * = open since before January 1st 2020
