Chino, California is a town located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,643. The name comes from the Chino Hills neighborhood which is adjacent to the community and straddling both U.S. Route 395 and Interstate 10. The first human habitation in what is now Chino was by Native Americans who hunted game throughout much of their territory including present-day Kern County. The area that became Chino was platted on February 14, 1885 by Hiralomar Sutter and Ned Teller with land grants that covered . In 1915, when parts of south Kern were annexed into Los Angeles County, portions of western Kern were also annexed into Los Angeles County making Chino part of the new city of Beverly Hills. Chino has been continuously inhabited since at least 1885 when it was part of Mexican Rancho San Fernando de las Palomas grant to José Gabriel Márquez y Costilla and his wife María Luisa Pacheco de la Cueva (née García). Márquez y Costilla sold title to his descendant Santiago Canseco y Arroyo in 1893 to John Cushing Sr.. In 1903 Harry Chandler bought a piece of Rancho San Fernando from Santiago Canseco Jr., which he renamed "Chano Hills". In 1911 developer Edward Beale purchased 120 acres (48 hectares) near what is now downtown Chino from Mr. Cushing for $5 million dollars. Beale named his new development "Beale's Hollywood" after himself and developed it into one of Southern California's most successful movie towns with over 100 theaters at its peak in the early 1920s before becoming a major center for gay life during World War II as Hollywood's leading gay district known as "the Zone." Pete Seeger played an early version of 'Ramblin' Jack' there in 1923 while living with fellow musician Woody Guthrie nearby; Seeger would later say that he learned how to play harmonica from Guthrie thereabouts too A number of other prominent performers including Bob Hope (1915–1996), Bing Crosby (1925–1998), Dean Martin ( 1951–2008) Dick Clark Productions Motown stars Sylveon Kelley ('The Sylveon Kelley Show'), Bobby Vee ('The Vandellas'), etc., took up residence during this time period such as Artie Shaw ('Flying Saucers Over LA') Donny Andray Marshall ('Dancing King'), etc.. It wasn't until after World War II when downtown buildings started being built on former movie lot property that many people moved out onto Main Street where they continued to live until current day despite efforts by developers to move them out again through various redevelopment projects... As Hollywood declined following WWII many old movieDistrict residents scattered but some returned home such as Artie Shaw who opened up his own restaurant down the street called Artie's Deli back in 1948 followed by others like Carl Stalling ('Ozzie & Harriet'), Jimmy Durante ('The Partridge Family'); Marty Feldman ('M*A*S*H'); Jerry Lewis (*1945); Elvis Presley (*1935); Ray Charles (* 1945)... Many current residents are descended from those original inhabitants like Jeff Koons (*1966), Dave Jones(*1969), Joey DeRoche(*1978), Rick Osterlin(*1982)); Wally Metzger(*1984)).
