Chino is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 24,411 at the 2000 census. Chino became an incorporated city in 1907 and has since grown to become one of Southern California's most heavily populated cities with a population of more than 600,000 residents. The economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The city is located near Interstate 580 and State Route 91. The first people to live in what is now Chino came from Northern Mexico during the Preclassic period about 5,500 years ago. They brought plants and animals with them as they wandered through what is now central California. In 1769, Coyote Creek Chief Manuel Nieto claimed land within present-day Chino boundaries for the Mexican government because he was the only Native American living there at that time. In 1821, Antonio Vallejo founded Rancho San Fernando de Arroyo Seco outside present-day Chino limits after purchasing 640 acres (240 hectares) of Rancho Viejo del Oro from Govinda Vasquez y Ortega. In 1828, Don José Garza took over Vallejo's ranchos; Garza named his new lands Rancho Los Pinos Secos because no trees grew there otherwise. At this time many prospectors were exploring mineral rights in this area so it was called "The Promised Land." One such prospector was James Wolkowicz who explored Dominguez Hills in 1886 while working for George Hearst's China Mail Company On July 13th 1888 Wolkowicz discovered an F4 diamondiferous gold mine on Sutter Hill just east of today's downtown Chino by using a metal detector which he had brought back with him from his search property Some 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Angel City where he had been operating under the name "Major Gold Drilling Company" On October 1st 1888 Wolkowicz filed a claim on behalf of Major Gold Drilling Company with US Commissioner David Starr Jordan who then granted deeds to four other men: John Wesley Powell who operated as "Jurassic Mines & Exploration Co.," Hercules Murchison who operated as "Murchison Mining and Trading Co.," Augustus De Shaw who operated as "De Shaw Mines & Exploring Co.", and Wolkowicz himself naming himself acting President thereof all under one roof until Mr JW Okamoto could be appointed president which he did on February 6th 1889 when all six men resigned effective February 15th 1889 effective March 2nd 1889 due to differences over mining claims within company boundaries . Mr Okamoto later changed those boundaries to include parts northward along Allard Road including current day El Centro . By 1899 there were 10 employees making discoveries totaling $2 million worth ofGold Nuggets but production ceased due to strikes by local miners plus problems associated with quartz water contamination caused by leaching operations . Production resumed again starting on January 1st 1902 when John Wesley Powell took over operation from Jurassic Mines & Exploration Company . From 1906 until 1915 Chino was part of Fresno County although it administratively functions as its own municipality since 1907 From 1915 until 1959 it was part of Kings Countyalthough it administratively functions as its own municipality since 1907
