The early years of Chino Valley were difficult as it was located close to hostile Apache Indian tribes who frequently raided and burned villages near the area. In 1861, an Act of Congress created a township within Los Angeles County called “Chinatown” which became home to most of the earliest Chinese immigrants living in Southern California. Many Chinamen worked as laborers on local farms or took jobs as menial tasks aboard American ships coming into port at Anaheim/Long Beach during this time period (Liang 1980). Through hard work and determination, many Chinamen made it through tough times both during World War II when America faced great challenges from Japan and subsequent peace settlements; and following World War II when many returned home with new knowledge about how to manage modern American society (Fernandez 1990). Today, Chinatown is one of Los Angeles’s most vibrant commercial districts with diverse cultural experiences for all ages groups that can be enjoyed by visitors from all corners of Los Angeles County (Kanter 2002).
The area now known as Chino, California was part of the Mexican Territory of Alta California when it was won by the United States in 1848. The town of Chino was founded on November 6, 1849 by American settlers and became a U.S. military post during the Gold Rush. In 1853, Chino was renamed Garden Grove after two civic leaders who had fought for its establishment: James G. Gardiner and George W. Parkhurst.
