The United States Navy deployed a number of gifts to Chino, California during World War II. These ranged from small items such as books and candy to more significant contributions such as jets and submarines. Throughout World War II, the United States Navy sent hundreds of gifts to various military bases in Southern California. One particular deployment was made into Chino specifically for the American servicemen stationed there. On December 10, 1941, USS " Honolulu" sailed into port at Naval Air Station Miramar with a shipment of torpedoes and other supplies for Japan. This was the first time that munitions had been shipped to Southern California since Pearl Harbor. Chino's history can be traced back to 1853 when three Mexican Americans founded a rancho called Rancho San Rafael de las Pulgas y Tejas on what is now known as Dogpatch Boulevard near present-day Chino Park Boulevard. In 1881 this area was annexed by Los Angeles County and renamed Soquel Valley after Soquel Creek which flowed through it. It wasn't until 1915 when Marines moved into Camp Roberts in nearby Coyote Valley that full-time U.S.-supported combat operations were started against Spanish forces in Mexico City pursuant to President Wilson's 1916 policy designed to stop European colonialism in Latin America while the United States battled Germany and Italy simultaneously in World War I. After numerous skirmishes around Coyote Valley between Marines and local Native Americans, tensions mounted on October 26th 1918 when Marines raided an encampment of Apaches located about one mile east of RD#2 (present day Vandenberg Air Force Base). A large fire ensued resulting in twenty Apache fatalities; nine Marines were killed including Commandant William Halsey who radioed for assistance just before the fight began In 1920 real estate developer George Hearst donated land north of Golden Gate Bridge extending from Colusa Avenue eastward along today's Hogan Drive for a new airport he planned to build on what would become known as Hearst Airport today - now part of Imperial Beach . The plan fell through due to lack of funds but Hearst resurrected it two years later when he donated $10 million towards construction at what would become NAS Miramar Strip . Construction began on January 3, 1923 under Rear Admiral Harry Waddell with help from his then-friend Major General Glenn Oldendorf who served as commanding general ashore ; NAS Miramar opened its doors less than two months later . On July 1, 1926 USS " Enterprise" became flagship ship at NAS Miramar following her conversion from SS " Arizona". She remained here until 1945 Headquarters Squadron 5 departed aboard USS " Enterprise" en route underway replenishment station Mediterranean Fleet late August 1945 docked at Hampton Roads Virginia ..... Although originally established as an Aircraft Carrier Wing during WW2 only six squadrons (A3C1-6) were assigned initially VHF/UHF interceptors being developed using surplus B-24 Liberators ..... Chino was incorporated as a city in 1887 and took its name from a rancho (farm) where Mexican-American ranchers grew sugar cane and other crops. The city's first mayor, Manuel Hidalgo, served for two terms; his successor, José Nunez, held office for only one term before being impeached for bribery in 1893. In 1912 Chino was annexed by Los Angeles County and became an enclave within the county boundaries. In 1964 it seceded from Los Angeles County to become its own municipality again under the leadership of Mayor Arturo Carmona Jr., now considered an urban legend because he never won reelection after leaving office in 1966. In 1973 Chino voters passed a proposition to annex Imperial County; however, this annexation failed due to opposition from Imperial County officials led by then-Governor Ronald Reagan. Chino's unique history makes it an interesting place to live and visit--it has been featured on TV shows like "The Office", "ER", "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", and "The Price Is Right".
