Chino is a city in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1869 byMexican immigrants and has since been the cultural and commercial center of the San Bernardino Valley. The population of Chino was 332 in 2010, down from 479 in 2000. However, its economy continues to grow due to its location within the Inland Empire region and its proximity to major metropolitan areas. The original inhabitants of what is now Chino were Native American people who lived near present-day Mission Viejo and Menifee Creek. The first European settler in what is now Chino was José Antonio Aguirre, who arrived in December 1821 from Mexico City on the ship Santa Rosa de la Union captained by Manuel Nieto. Aguirre named his new land “Chinatown” after his native town of Chinandega, Jalisco, Mexico. A year later, he sold part of his holdings to Juan Bautista Gordillo for $800 worth of goods including cattle and mule deer hides. In 1868, Chinese workers working for mine owners began arriving in Chino from China as part of the rapidly growing labor force at nearby mines. By 1870, about 60% of all residents were Chinese Americans; however, their status as citizens wasn’t fully respected until after World War II when discriminatory laws against Asians became apparent.. Aguirre died suddenly in 1872 while on vacation in Mexicali; therefore nominations for induction into the Mexican American National Historical Society (MANH) continued through successive generations until 1944 when then-Mayor James Rolph ordered all nominations destroyed because he felt they would incriminate local Chinese businessesowners- an action that was condemned both by local politicians and MANH members themselves.. During this time period there also increased tensions between white settlers and Chinatown customers over price discrimination or access to social services unavailable to whites only.. Eventually public pressure forced CHINO City Manager Juana Ramos Calderón to sign an ordinance creating zoning regulations limiting construction within certain boundaries specificially designed for business purposes instead of general neighborhood development.. This ordinance led eventually to mass reclamation activity which created more than 1/3rds modern Chino with variety architecture styles such as Spanish Mission Revival (1890), Craftsman Bungalow (1910), Taft Shaped Villa (1920), Roman villa complex (1930), Japanese Imperial Style Nihonbashi Resort & Casino (1980) – still extant today! Some notable landmarks during this time include: First Presbyterian Church 1893-1974; Stonington Park 1907; Chinatown Club House 1912; Cathedral 1917-2006; El Rancho 1920s–present day
