Chowchilla was founded in 1881 as a cattle station on the Kern River by George Waddell and his brother-in-law, John Coulter. The first store opened in 1882. In 1898, Chittenden v. United States (No. 103) was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court and allowed for white settlement of Rancho San Manuel de la Luz (later known as Chowchilla). This led to an increase in cow traffic through the area which required more goods and services to be provided from Chittenden's store which later became known as "The Olde Store." In 1899, James Fenton purchased Rancho San Manuel de la Luz from George Waddell for $2,500 cash and settled 800 Mexican Indians there with land grants totaling . He began ranching operations which included 4 herds of Hereford cows and 10 horses that he sold off at auction to pay back his debt to creditors$. In 1906 he leased Rancho San Manuel de la Luz from Capt Eusebio Baca y Pascual who had bought it from James Fenton for $1,000 cash plus 160 acres of land adjacent which he developed into a town called Baca Heights (). During World War II (), many residents of Chowchilla worked on nearby munitions plants such as Hanford Arsenal until 1946 when closure ended all production there

Chowchilla became an incorporated city on March 14, 1907. It was reincorporated as a town on October 15, 1912. Chowchilla is located in central Kern County at (36.848697, -117.577965). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,491 people, 598 households, and 442 families residing in thetown limits; however this figure may change due to village growth or annexation by other towns within Kern County since 2000: There are 615 housing units built before January 1st 2009 which have not been updated yet according to recent censuses
Chowchilla is a town in San Bernardino County, California. It was established in 1853 by James Irvine and his wife Rachel as the first post office in what is now the city of San Bernardino. The town was named after the Creek cholla or "cholla" palm tree, which grows abundantly along the creek's banks. The first school in Chowchilla was built in 1857 and it served as the only school until 1912 when a new school building was erected. The old school building still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1907, Chowchilla incorporated as a townsite under an act of the State of California.
