The history of roasted coffee in Chowchilla begins with the early days of electricity. In 1892, a dynamo was installed at Chowchilla Electric Light Company to power the company’s lights. The first bag of coffee beans was roasted on this site. In 1918, a roasting business was established by A.L. Henschel and Sons in Chowchilla. This business continued until 1951 when it became known as First National Coffee Roasters. From 1951-1969, First National operated out of the old Chumby Building in Chinatown before moving to their current location on Third Street in 1969. First National is one of only a few businesses that has been continuously operating in Chowchilla since 1907 when the town first started to grow and develop around it (Chowchilla Historical Society plaque). Today, First National Coffee Roasters continues to roast amazing coffees from start to finish right here at their new headquarters on Third Street – complete with an outdoor seating area for enjoying fresh air during summertime!

Fresh roasted coffee is a unique and cherished commodity in the world of coffee. Roasted beans are carefully selected, roasted to perfection and then packaged for shipment. The process of roasting coffee has many layers that contribute to its flavor. First, the beans are dried in sun or heat lamps. Next, they are ground into a fine powder. Lastly, they are boiled before being poured into small cups or jars for storage. The first espresso machines were designed to roast whole bean coffee using a French press method which was more efficient than using a blend machine or hand brewer. Coffee began being brewed commercially as early as 1847 when Boston Brewing Company started selling their own brand of espresso cortado (a type of Italian espresso). Since the late 1800s, different methods have been used to roast coffee including patchouli oiling (adding fragrance), direct-fired baking (using an open flame instead of a oven) and even using hot water and vinegar mixed together! Today’s roasters use all sorts of brewing processes to achieve their desired flavor profile. At its heart, fresh roasted coffee is still about creating great tasting cup of joe!
