The first gun giveaway in Chowchilla took place on December 14, 1887 when Captain Edward H. Smith presented two handguns to Mayor George Auerbach for free use as part of an election campaign donation. In 1888, Major John Prentice organized a shooting competition at Coyote Creek Ranch which attracted many local residents including Sheriff William Copley and Mayor George Auerbach. This event is also considered to be the beginning of gun gift history in Chowchilla. At this time, it was not uncommon for residents to give away weapons to friends or family members during celebratory events such as holidays or birthdays. Chowchilla, California is a small town in the hills of central California. It was founded by Mormon settlers in 1847 and became part of incorporated Los Angeles County in 1932. The population of Chowchilla was 2,594 at the 2010 census. The first people to live here were the Tongva Indians who inhabited this area for centuries before being replaced by the Mexican-American settlers. The town's name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where salmon swim." The early residents were all white Mormons who came overland from Nauvoo, Illinois. When they reached what is now Chowchilla, they found a place that resembled the rapids on the Snake River which they had been told would be their destiny as Latter Day Saints. In 1847, nine families set out from Nauvoo under Brigham Young and started up the Chico Road. By 1850, there were about 150 Mormons living in and around Chowchilla; however, it rapidly declined due to wars with Mexico and other problems along the route. In 1853, Brigham Young sent his son George Washington Young to establish El Cajon Mission Station near present day San Diego as part of his expansive new see operations across North America; however, George Washington Young never made it to Chico because he drowned while crossing a river into Mexico during a cattle drive. In 1854–1855 another group of Mormon pioneers led by Orson Pratt arrived at Chowchilla after journeying through much of southern California overland from Salt Lake City via Yuma Pass and Prescott Valley during organized wagon train trips known as "the Mormon Trail." They built rockets using forge fireslight to measure distances between settlements on both sides of the trail; when they located El Cajon (now San Diego), they decided against founding a permanent settlement here because water availability would have been critical for farming purposes given its location sandwiched between two giant mountain ranges – Mt Carmel and Mt Mohawk – without any natural springs or riverside accessible year-round except for occasional floods that affected isolated villages downstream such as Arroyo Seco Canyon (northwest today’s Pasadena). accordingly Chico was chosen as their future capital instead which later became known as Sacramento
Chowchilla, California is a city in Kern County, California, U.S.A. It was founded by Mexican Americans in 1853 as part of the Rancho San Francisco de las Pulgas settlement and named for José César Chuchilla y Valdez, one of the original settlers. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Chowchilla is located on the banks of the El Camino Real between Bakersfield and Tulare Counties and is adjacent to Porterville and Visalia. The City was named after José César Chuchilla y Valdez who settled there in 1853 with his family from Puebla, Mexico. Chuchilla purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Pedro Garza near present-day Chowchilla Heights in 1852; he also donated 20 acres (8 ha) to each man living within $50 per year towards constructing a schoolhouse and town square. In 1854-55, Chuchilla built a small stockaded wall around his new community to protect it from unauthorized entry by outsiders and established a jail for local criminals. In 1865–66 Juan Sánchez organized an agricultural strike against forced labor conditions at various Mission properties in Kern County; this led to violence that left three men dead and many injured across southern Kern County including Chowchilla Valley. This event started what would become known as The Great Southern Strike which successfully ended forced labor abuses throughout Southern California agriculture that persisted until well into the 21st century. The first post office opened in Chowchilla on November 9, 1861; it was renamed Visalia two years later after then Governor Manuel Micheltorena signed legislation creating Mono County which included Chowchilla Valley within its boundaries east of Route 105. By 1870, most residents had relocated to new towns or cities such as Porterville (founded 1886), Midland (1892), Stockton (1912), Weldon Park (1920), Grover Beach (1924), Oceanside (1928), Whittier(1931) and La Quinta (1935). As Anglo American society grew increasingly diverse during World War II service members brought their families back home following Victory Over Japan; many of these newcomers eventually assimilated into local white communities through married
