Chowchilla is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,953 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is adjacent to Bakersfield. The name "Chowchilla" comes from two words; Chow (a type of chili) and chilla (aolla). The first word means "place where chili is made." The second word means "city." In 1881, Charles S. Goodrich and his brother-in-law John Flanagan founded a small community called Cholla near Chowchilla Creek in what is now southern Kern County. They named it after their maternal grandmother Cholla Sanchez who came from New Mexico to live with them in 1875. In 1906, Goodrich's son George Goodrich donated land south of Chowchilla Creek for the establishment of an agricultural college which would become UC Berkeley. This community was also known as Agricultural College Hill because it sat on what are nowCollege Avenue and University Boulevard in Berkeley Heights. In 1923, UC Berkeley moved its main campus from nearby Oakland to Chowchilla when alcohol prohibition began to be enforced in California. In 1945, local resident Ozzie Smith organized a drive to collect cans of gasoline used by the U .S . Army during World War II and delivered them to members of the City Council at City Hall across Telegraph Avenue from then home of post office General Store No . 3 (). From these cans they made their first gas station - Lumberman's Cafe - on First Street east of Highway 95 about two miles northeast of present day Chowchilla. On October 15th 1945 local residents Harry Weiserbach Jr., Mrs . Donald Heineman and Edna Cantor drove 50 gallons each representing all registered voters into town hall on South Fourth Street just north of Highway 95 opposite post office general store No 3 (). After voting against enactment by state legislators authorizing taxation for public works related thereto (the ordinance passed that same day), they brought suit with Siebold & Bigelow LLP against Governor Ronald Reagan et al.. A decision rendered by U .S District Court Judge Dwight Emerson invalidated this act resulting in an injunction preventing future similar actions! This event typified what would come to be known as "the Cleanup". On October 9th 1951 Mayor Richard Jaffe ordered all municipally owned water systems turned off due primarily to nonpayment by private owners thereof following order received from Govt Municipal Utility District executive director Roy Kappelman prohibiting any further water outages without written notice transmitted through tank truck service providing customers' names Today there still rests some evidence remaining throughout downtown Chowchilla verifying contact between early 21st century natives who resided here prior to white settlement dating back over 100 years ago inclusive!

Chowchilla, California is a small town located in Fresno County, California. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera metropolitan area. The Chowchilla post office operated from 1892 to 1916 and again from 1934 to 1983. The community was named after Francisco Xavier Chua, a Mexican American rancher who donated land for the town site. Most of Chowchilla's early residents were Chinese immigrants who worked on farms in nearby Tulare County. When World War II began, many of these farmers enlisted in the military and many of them settled in Chowchilla as soldiers returned home. Many of these men also founded businesses in Chowchilla such as Chinatown Hardware and Cafe (now known as Jingles Chinese Restaurant). After World War II ended, most of the original Chinese immigrants left for various reasons: economic insecurity following wartime rationing; political instability due to changes in China's government; or fear that their homes would be confiscated if they remained living within close proximity to Japanese Americans during the war period. In 1957, however, some new Chinatowns were established around Los Angeles and San Francisco due to growing social/economic tension between these regions' Chinatowns and those closer to urban areas. As a result of this tension, few people from Chowchilla remain active within that community today. Nevertheless, there are still several restaurants which serve Bay Area cuisine such as Sing Tao Sushi & Japanese Steak House and Hakkasan Asian Bistro & Lounge (formerly popularly called Hong Kong Pizza Place). In recent years there has been an effort by local citizens to revive Chowchilla as a center for cultural activities including art exhibitions and concerts. A number of different organizations have partnered with each other to host events throughout the year including: Artspace Inc., History Park Foundation Inc., Valley Folklore Society Inc., Crescent Moon Dance Company Inc., Alley Cats! Productions/Dance Theater), Kalifornia Folklife Center], Pahrump Arts Council], Mexicali Tuna Cannery]], [and] Chimayo Artisan Coffee roasters]. Various festivals have been scheduled throughout the year including an annual street fair held on Friday evening near Main Street; arts&crafts shows held annually at various venues around town;[Chinese New Year] carnival type games;[Christmas season];[summer festival];Chinese food week.]
