It is the most populous city in the San Joaquin Valley and one of the largest cities east of Interstate 5. The first person to shoot a handgun in Chowchilla was George Brinson on July 3rd, 1892. From that date until 1934 there were no restrictions on handguns except for those placed by state law. In 1934, Chico City passed an ordinance outlawing handguns and making it a misdemeanor to carry or use any firearm without a license from the city police department. This ordinance lasted until 1991 when it was repealed due to lack of enforcement by local police officers

The first people to live here were the Mono people who migrated from central California around AD 1810. They built villages on high ground near present-day Chowchilla and other areas in Kern County. In 1846, prospectors found oil reserves here and named the place "Chowchilla" for one of these discoveries. In 1907, a group of farmers in nearby San Bernardino formed the Kern Valley Water District to provide water for their communities. The name "Chowchilla" was applied to that district as well as neighboring Fontana and Credit Valley because they were all located within a short distance of each other on State Route 62 (now US 101). In 1928, after years of effort by local officials and citizens, Chowchilla became an incorporated town with its own government and school system under the leadership of Mayor Harry Daugherty. The town had been struggling financially ever since it amalgamated with nearby Fontana in 1928; however, it did manage to gain some notoriety due to its unique location - just east of Angeles National Forest on state Route 82 - which made it a popular tourist destination for those looking for an offbeat experience while vacationing in Southern California. Over time, Chowchilla's economy has shifted towards tourism; however, much like many smaller towns throughout America during this time period, there are still many local businesses that rely heavily on agriculture including cattle husbandry and wine production. Today's community is home to a few thousand residents who enjoy both peaceful rural living and easy access to shopping opportunities (including several big box stores) located just minutes away by car or bus from downtown Chowchillas' main business district."
