The United States Marine Corps was founded on September 15, 1846, in San Diego, California. The first Marines were recruited from the Mexican-American community in San Diego and they were called "Tuleys" because of their Spanish heritage. The Marines fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the American Civil War (1861-1865). On April 12, 1912, President William McKinley signed into law a bill authorizing the creation of an army for service in World War I. The marines continued to serve with distinction during World War II as part of both General Douglas MacArthur's Southwest Pacific Theater command and as part of General Dwight Eisenhower's Normandy invasion force. In 1945, following Japan's surrender, U.S. Marines served as occupation forces in Okinawa until Japan was placed under Japanese military control again in 1946. Since then there have been several deployments to Japan affecting both local and international operations: Operations Lionheart (1992), Desert Storm (1991), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003), Operation Enduring Freedom (2011). Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 98,906 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in San Diego County and the second-largest city on the US mainland after San Francisco. Chula Vista's economy is based on service industry jobs and retail trade. They named their new town "Chulavista" after José Miguel Carrillo y Pavón – one of three teenage virgins captured by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his attempt to quash a revolution being waged by Mexican Americans in Chihuahua state against Governor Agustín de Alvarado. Carrillo y Pavón had been married off before he was captured and therefore not counted among those taken into captivity; nevertheless, because he bore news of what was happening among his captors, he became associated with this event through name only. For many years no one outside Mexico knew about Chulasvista until it was discovered by US servicemen stationed there during World War II while investigating potential arms dumps being operated by Japan near Point Loma on Baja California Peninsula
