Chula Vista is a city in Southern California, United States. The population was 83,381 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Diego County and the second largest city in Orange County. The metropolitan area of Chula Vista had a population of 909,405 as of 2013. The first settlers to the area that now Chula Vista were Native Americans who called it "Tuba City". They built their villages near present-day downtown Chula Vista and on artificial canals dug through sand dunes for irrigation and trade with other tribes. In 1879, Rancho Santa Fe de Cucamonga was acquired by J.P. Morgan's son John Dutton as part of his purchase of Unincorporated territoryados (non-Indian) in southern California after Mexican–American War victory over General Antonio López de Santa Anna at Adobe Walls on November 13th, 1848. This property later became Chula Vista Landmark Park & Preserve which continues to be managed by county government today under the name "Chula Vista Parks & Recreation District". In 1886, two brothers named George Hargrave and Hiram Hargrave bought 8 acres (3 ha) southeast of what is now downtown Chula Vista from Rufus King for $500 per acre ($10/acre). They began to develop what would become known as "Hargrave Heights" which included much of present-day downtown Chulasville with its original Mission Revival architecture dating back to 1887 when Spanish missionaries founded Mission San José del Oroño northeast of present-day Downtown Chulasville. A new mission was established about 1 mile (1 km) east of where Hargrave Heights developed and still stands today - La Purísima Concepción Rey de Jesús del OroñoMission San José Del OroñoA few years later they also acquired adjacent land south of I-5 including much of today's South Park neighborhood bounded by Mesa Road on the west, Paso Robles Avenue on the north, Pasadena Avenue on the east and Harbor Drive on the south; all this land eventually became part of Chavez Ravine park located just east off I-5 between South Park Boulevard and Mesa Road outside southeast corner lot owned by Starbucks coffee company until recently(the last remaining parcel within mostly undeveloped Chavez Ravine park boundaries). By 1907 there were 10 stores in downtownChulasville employing 500 people while service station usage increased from 3 vehicles/day to 20 vehicles/day due to growth around local military installations during World War II See map below: Store locations map circa 1907 After WWII ended all military activity moved away leaving Downtown business districts empty except for one store each left open immediately following WWII because no new development could be approved during wartime zoning limitations Many current buildings date back to these early days such as American Savings Bank building at 333 W Harbor Dr., First National Bank Building at 350 W Mesa Rd., etc.; some have been replaced by more recent structures while others remain largely unchanged throughout decadesVancouver Sun photo Archives photo #7001
