Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 134,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater San Diego area and is located on the southern coast of Menomonee Bay. The first Europeans to visit Chula Vista were Spanish traders in 1542 who charted the bay's coastline and named it "Monte Cristallo" ( meaning "Mountain of Cristal") after one of their shipments from Spain. Englishman John Hawkins also visited Chula Vista in 1778 and named it Eustaquio Point because he thought it resembled an artificial rock formations known as "Eustaquio Peak" on Juan de Fuca Island off the coast of Vancouver Island. In 1824, Mexican land grantee Alvaro Obregon founded Rancho Rincon de las Palomas here on what is now East Beach Road. In 1875, Obregon sold his holdings to mining magnate Jameson Taft for $10 million dollars. Taft renamed Chula Vista Municipal Airport taqueria El Burro Cavernario after himself in 1928. The airport served as a landing spot for American military forces during World War II before becoming a commercial airport with service starting in 1958. In 1969, Mayor Noel Kamenetz announced plans to develop Chavez Ravine into a large suburban community adjacent to downtown Chula Vista while preserving Chavez Ravine's natural resources including oak trees and chaparral habitat; however this plan never progressed beyond development office planning until 1982 when developers bought out Kamenetz's majority interest and started construction themselves which continued until 1990 when City Council declared Chavez Ravine an open-air park which ended any developer ambitions to change or redevelop the parkland since its inception A new city charter was adopted by voters in 1988 that established Chula Vista as its own municipality with full police powers and responsibilities within municipal limits without depending upon either San Diego County or the federal government for support Chulavista has been mentioned several times throughout history as a possible place for Californios ( Mexican Americans ) who had fled Mexico during various uprisings there against Porfirio Diaz's rule to build their own communities away from their families' homes .There have been many Chicano-owned businesses operating here such as La Mesa Cigars & Tobacco Company (founded by Enrique Hernandez ), Pico Rivera Sports Complex (), Pacific Gas & Electric (), Atlantic Suncare () along with many restaurants like Mexicali Gourmet Pizza (), Chaparral Grill (), Rincon Latino Restaurant (), etc., making this part of southeast San Diego County one of most multicultural areas outside Los Angeles or Miami
