The city became known for its many wartime facilities such as anAftermath bombing shelter built near downtown that can still be seen today; an Army ammunition dump across State Route 163; and Navy Yard #1 which produced USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Yorktown (CV-9), among other warships. After 1945, Chula Vista's economy shifted towards professional services due to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix and Anaheim Hills. Today, Chulasvita remains one of Southern California's fastest growing cities with over 50% growth since 2000 alone! Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 64,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Chula Vista was founded on December 12, 1871 by Captain John W. Stevenson and other soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Regiment while they were stationed at Fort Yuma during the Mexican-American War. The original settlement included just a few homes and consisted only of troops and their horses. In 1881, Chula Vista became an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. The first mayor was Hiram Johnson and the first councilman was Lorenzo Sims. In 1912 Chula Vista annexed part of Rincon Valley which made it into a city again with a population over 1,000 people. That year also saw the opening of Ramona Park Shopping Center in downtown Chula Vista which became one of America's most important shopping districts for families before suburban malls grew up around it in the 1970s and 1980s
