Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger San Diego metropolitan area. In 1821, Juan Rodríguez Caballero established a mission here, called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. Chula Vista's downtown is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in southern California and has been home to successive waves of European arrivals since its founding: Missionarios in 1821, Franciscans in 1842, Mexicans in 1858, and Californios in 1912. The City Council began work on plans for annexation by Los Angeles on December 5, 1907; Chula Vista became an incorporated city on January 1, 1909. The first post office opened at Chula Vista on March 17th of that year. The name "Chula Vista" was given by Captain José Antonio Vargas who led the Mexican forces against General Manuel Micheltorena during the Insurrection of 1847-48 which left more than 150 dead and over 2 thousand wounded in Chula Viejo (present day Escondido). Captain Vargas named this small town after his hometown of Chiapas City (Mexico) because he thought it would be easier to find goods and people there than trying to travel all the way down to San Diego. During World War II many residents moved out of their homes as war preparations intensified but some chose to stay behind and fight as guards or troops for various countries such as Japan or Germany throughout World War II. After 1945 most residents returned home but a few continued living near Camp Pendleton until finally they vacated their homes during Expo '92 when everything around them changed again following 9/11 atrocities
