The Chula Vista area was first settled in the late 18th century by Mexican Americans. The name "Chula Vista" is Spanish for " freshwater bay." The first European to see the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who sailed into San Diego Bay on his way to California in 1542. In 1795, Captain Manuel Nieto of Ferretti's ship Don José reported seeing a group of Mexica people living near present-day Chula Vista and he called them "Chumash." In 1821, Rancho Santa Fe was sold to Obregon and his family. They began farming land around what is now downtown Chula Vista. A post office was established at this location in 1825, and remained in operation until 1888. By 1850, there were over 100 Anglo families living in and around Chula Vista. On December 7, 1849, Mexico gained independence from Spain and formed its own government. On January 14, 1850, Mexican War of Independence started when General Antonio López de Santa Annaez attacked Pueblo Monterrey with 5,000 cavalry and 3 battalions of infantry under his command. On January 28–29 Santa Anna organized an expedition against Pueblo San Marcos led by Colonel Francisco Xavier Lopez with 1st Battalion Alta California Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Menéndez de Mármol y Valdés at the head of an army numbering 10 companies totaling 300 men under Brigadier General Fernando de la Cueva y Salinas estimated at 6500 men total including artillery while 3 Companies (Alta California Regiment) guarded an exposed garrison located along 200 feet wide channel separating Laguna del Norte from Laguna del Sur which connected these two lakes forming what is now El Paso County sidereal Lakes Preserve east of today’s downtown Chula Vista
