Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 34,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater San Diego Area and has a total area of 26 square miles (69 square kilometers). The first Europeans to visit Chula Vista were the Spanish in 1821. In 1892, Chula Vista became an incorporated town when it joined San Diego County. The original name for the city was "Tijuana". Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 67,691 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Diego County and is bordered by Carlsbad to the east, Encinitas to the south, and La Jolla to the west. The name "Chula Vista" is derived from Chumash words meaning "place where deer live." The first Europeans who arrived in what is now Chula Vista were Spanish Franciscan missionaries in 1771–72. At that time it was part of Rancho El Cajon de la Purísima Concepción y Buenavista. In 1821, Don Manuel Nieto donated land for a mission school at what is now Mission Trails Park. In 1828, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Chula Vista became part of Mexican territory under General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of San Diego County. In 1846, after several years of skirmishes between United States forces and Mexican troops near present-day Del Mar Heights, Governor Alvarado called a state convention to consider annexation into California due to fears that if left alone Mexico would annex more adjacent lands into its growing empire while leaving northern Californias largely uncontrolled by Mexican authority. A resolution was issued declaring that all male residents over 21 years old must take an oath of allegiance to Mexico before adoption could be made; no children were given this right. This measure caused great indignation among American settlers in anticipation of another war with Mexico over control of their new land empires; however no conflict ensued because most Americans did not believe they had any legal rights or recourse should hostilities arise. On April 14th 1870 Commodore George Dewey sailed upSanDiego bay loaded with cannons in preparation for open warfare against Emilio Aguinaldo's Philippines Independence Army seeking revenge for Ulysses S Grant's deplorable treatment during The Civil War On July 15th 1870 Philippine Flag flew over City Hall Tower until it was taken down on October 3rd 1870 after Aguinaldo proclaimed himself Emperor
