Small batch coffee has been around in Chula Vista, California for over a century. The first time small batch coffee was mentioned was in 1898 when theigmatica roaster offered a small quantity of their finest morning coffee to visitors at the Chula Vista Clubhouse. The history of small batch coffee is long and involves many different people and businesses. In 1910, Harry Kipper purchased three acres of land in Chula Vista and began to roast his own beans. He named his business after himself, Harry's Coffee & Tea Company. Kipper continued to produce medium-sized batches of coffee until 1966 when he sold his company to the Peet's Coffee Corporation. During the 1960s, Chula Vista became known as the "Cupcake Capital of America." Due to this reputation, many businesses decided to open up shop in Chula Vista. One such business was Don Julio Mexican Restaurant which opened its doors in 1968. Don Julio quickly became one of the most popular restaurants in town due to its high quality coffee and delicious cupcakes. After Don Julio left town, other local businessmen decided they wanted a piece of the Pie Pie action. By 1978, two separate companies had emerged: The Coffee Merchants Group which ran Joes' Coffee Shop and The Waterfront Cafeteria which operated El Tritón Cafe (later renamed La Casita). Both firms produced high qualitysmallbatchcoffeewhichwasavailableinlocalmarkets throughoutChulavista.(See Appendix C for more information on these businesses.)

In early 2006, a small batch of coffee beans was roasted in Chula Vista. The beans were brought to the city by truck and then roasted at the nearby Red Lobster restaurant.

Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 78,569 as of the 2010 census. Its name comes from the Chumash word "chula" meaning "hoax." The first known inhabitants of what is now Chula Vista were the Tongva people. They arrived in 1769 and established themselves on what is now East Beach Street. By 1821, they had moved to their current location on California Avenue east of First Street. The town started off as a small farming community with only two buildings and 12 residents. However, by 1868 it had grown enough to become an incorporated village with a population of 100 people. In 1916, Chula Vista became part of San Diego County when it was created from portions of Escondido and other towns in southern San Diego County. In 1969, the city built its first professional sports arena when it purchased the land at Third Avenue and Isthmus Boulevard for $2 million dollars. That same year also saw the opening of the chula Vista library which has since been renamed after Mayor Dianne Feinstein's husband Garry McCarthy (D-San Francisco). In 2005, City Councilman David Alvarez (D-Chula Vista) successfully introduced a bill that would have funded construction of new housing units in downtown Chula Vista through bonds issued by the city government rather than taxation levied against businesses within walking distance of City Hall. This measure failed to pass due to pressure from developers who instead lobbied for tax breaks that would have benefited them rather than residents living close to City Hall
