In 1969, Apple Inc., founded by Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison, moved its headquarters from Cupertino to Citrus Heights. At that time Silicon Valley was still relatively rural with only a few small towns scattered around it; Citrus Heights was one of those locations. Silicon Valley had slowly started moving towards downtowns while also becoming more diverse racially; as a result, jobs in downtowns became scarce while new businesses started up near campus areas such as Googleplex and Applebee’s restaurant on Telegraph Avenue

The first post office in Citrus Heights was established in 1887. In 1919, Citrus Heights became part of the City of Oakland which made it an exclave within San Francisco proper. In 1998, Citrus Heights voted to annex a portion of unincorporated Richmond District including most of what are now Hilltop Village and Strawberry Plains neighborhoods. The annexation created a new city government with its own police and fire departments as well as a water system and waste management facility for the annexed area. As one of Northern California's fastest-growing cities since 2000, Citrus Heights has seen significant development over the past few decades with several large housing projects coming online such as Castlemont Village or Oaks Pointe developments adjacent to Interstate 280/Highway System Boulevard leading out into Martinez Creek Park while smaller projects have popped up throughout town including an initial phase of construction on Southshore Drive known locally as "The Maze" This latest phase includes plans for an even more expansive development called Northshore - comprising 575 homes with ground floor retail space and five-story towers reaching towards Santana Row - set to be completed by 2020 should all go ahead as planned
