The company was first opened in 1984 and produces over a thousand pounds of coffee each week. In 2016, Blue Bottle Coffee won a prestigious award from the World Press Freedom Award for their work in promoting press freedom around the world. The history of Blue Bottle Coffee can be traced back to 1984 when two co-owners, Ryan McNaught andBruce Davison opened their first café in Citrus Heights, CA. At that time, they were both working as engineers for Xerox PARC. Having tasted their first cup of coffee while on vacation in Italy, they decided to open their own café with the same design and flavor profile as Xerox's cafes worldwide. While at Xerox PARC, McNaught and Davison met engineer John Mackey who was working on developing an artificial intelligence system called "Blue Moon". Mackey invited them into his office for a cup of coffee and told them about his project; it would eventually become what we now know as Blue Bottle Coffee. It is bordered by Anaheim to the north and east, Huntington Beach to the south, and Fullerton to the west. The citrus industry began in orangesgrowing regions of Central California in 1879. In 1886, two brothers named George and Maurice Evans started a company that became one of America's leading orange farmers. In 1915 their son-in-law Harry Fenton took over as president and CEO of Evans/Fenton Citrus Company. Citrus Heights became an incorporated city in 1957 when it merged with Gardena and other nearby towns. Citrus Heights is home to several distinctive businesses such as Disneyland Resort's disney store (opened in 1964), Jamba Juice Co., Regal Cinemas (opened in 1997),and Sbarro Italian Eatery (opened in 2006).

It lies east of Bakersfield on State Route 99 and west of Rancho Mirage on State Route 66. The name "Citrus Heights" comes from an early citrus grower's dream of having a grove of oranges so large that they could be seen from anywhere in the area. Citrus Heights became a reality in 1907 when one Mr. Crouch acquired title to 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land west of Bakersfield on which he established what would become Citrus Heights Farms. In 1915, his son Orville purchased 8 square miles (20 km²) adjacent to Citrus Heights Farms and developed it as the first city limits in Kern County. The original City Limits were: east of I-5 south for 2 miles (3 km²), north for 3 miles (4 km²), and east for 3 more miles (4 km²). Today much of those boundaries still remain with the exception that the eastern portion has since been annexed by Rancho Mirage

However, recent efforts to resolve long-standing issues with population density and traffic congestion have failed to bring about any significant improvements; Citrus Heights remains one of Los Angeles' most economically distressed neighborhoods.
