Citrus Heights, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the east side of the city of Los Angeles and has a population of about 508 people as of 2010. The name "Citrus Heights" comes from when citrus trees were grown there in the early 1900s. In 1929, orange groves were established in Citrus Heights by J.P. Morgan and others who wanted to increase oranges production for their American market. The groves continue to produce oranges today. The town was founded on July 17, 1922 by Harry Hering and his wife Mildred. They named it after Arthur citrus grower James Litchfield Crippen's estate near Sacramento, California where they lived at that time. Citrus Heights was incorporated as a village on August 14, 1923 with a population of just twelve people. Citrus Heights, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County and the third most populous city in Greater Los Angeles County after Los Angeles and Riverside. Citrus Heights was first established as Rancho Cucamonga on October 11, 1881 by George H. Watts and his wife Mary Ann Watt with land donated from their father-in-law's rancho located adjacent to present day City of Citrus Heights. It takes its name from citrus fruit production which began early on the property that now makes up Citrus Heights. The first citrus trees were grown by George H. Watts Sr., who also founded one of Southern California's first cotton ginneries, Watts Cotton Gin Company #1 (later renamed Republic Ginn) in 1878 in nearby Walnut Creek. In 1886, prominent industrialist Jerome Loeffler bought Watts Cotton Gin Company #1 and began to produce fruits for local markets such as Sunkist watermelon and pears being shipped to Europe via steamship then transferred by wagon train across country to downtown Los Angeles where they were sold at Loeffler's store before being distributed through grocers throughout Southern California. By 1907 there were more than 20 plants operated by Loeffler, who named his company Empire Fruit Industries Limited (EFI). The peak of citruse production occurred during World War II when over two million cartons of oranges were exported from the United States; this number would be eclipsed only five years later when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in a national panic over food shortages caused primarily by war damage throughout much of North America including Southern Californian agriculture which had been virtually untouched during wartime shortages however orange production significantly declined thereafter due both to Japanese bombing raids targeting key transportation hubs as well as Depression-era economic factors following World War II overall citrus acreage increased only modestly as demand for fresh fruit decreased
The Citrus Heights area in Northern California was first settled by the Tongva people in the 18th century. The first white person to live in Citrus Heights was John Sutter, who arrived in 1847. He named his town after his family's citrus fruit business. In 1865, three brothers purchased a small piece of land southeast of downtown and began growing oranges and grapefruit. They named their rancho Citrus Heights after their home town in Spain. The house where they grew their crops is now known as the Sutter House Museum.
